VESA stands for the Video Electronics Standards Association. This international organization was founded in 1989 to establish an industry wide standard for the video electronics market. VESA wall mount specifications have become important as people have started using flat panel TVs in place of the former large boxes that required a stand. These standards put forth a guideline for a mounting pattern and screw size to allow for the safe mounting due to the weight and size of the screen. - These specifications are for the standard design of small- and medium-sized flat panels, both monitors and screens. These are intended for use with screens that are 12 inches to 22.9 inches. As with all other television dimensions, the size is measured diagonally from a bottom corner to the opposite top corner. This stands for televisions up to 30.8 pounds. The back houses a four-hole screw pattern. The size of the spacing between the four holes always forms a square and can measure 2.95 inches by 2.95 inches up to 3.94 inches by 3.94 inches.
- This classification of VESA specifications is for slightly larger flat screens. The screen size ranges from 23 inches to 30.9 inches. The back on this version has two options for six-hole screw patterns. It comes with a 7.87-by-3.94 inch pattern or a 7.87-by-7.87 inch pattern. This specification, with either screw pattern, is good for up to 50 pounds.
- This specification class is set up for large TV monitors. Maxing out at 250 pounds this will accommodate most flat screen televisions and monitors without worry. The screen size should range from 31 inches to 90 inches. The TVs come with one of three different six-hole patterns. The sizes are 15.7 inches by 7.87 inches, 23.57 inches by 15.7 inches, or 31.4 inches by 15.7 inches.
