Red and black licorice sticks form the ladder-like DNA molecule's two sides. These rails represent alternating sugar and phosphate molecules. Parents can allow kids to select which color stands for each molecule type. Alternatively, a different candy like mints may make the difference more distinct. Cut the licorice into equal pieces about 1 inch long. Lay them out in two identical lines of alternating red and black pieces.
