How I Relocated to Scotland – It’s Not as Scary as You May Think

I had always wanted to move to a different place and meet a lot of new people, so when an opportunity came up for me to relocate for work from my home town on the South Coast of England to Perth, which is in Scotland (rather than the Australian Perth, which would have been a bit warmer!) There are many reasons to move to a new town, or even a new country. I jumped at the chance. It was a little scary, but luckily I had a couple of months to prepare, and the support of my company.

One thing my company wasn't able to help with, aside from my removal costs, was finding somewhere to live. As I was going to be living on my own, I just wanted a relatively small apartment - two bedrooms, one for me and one for my junk. I did want it to be in a nice area and close to the shops and the Perth nightlife I'd heard so much about, so when I started my search for accommodation I looked up flats to rent in Perth that fitted the bill. Luckily, there were lots of properties available at the time, so I was able to identify quite a few possibilities.

I made a trip up to Scotland (on the company's time, which was a bonus!) to take a look at some of the flats to rent in Perth that I had shortlisted. The agent, Jenny, was really helpful and after taking a trip around about five different flats I had been interested in, I picked out my new home and got the paperwork started, with a month to go before my planned move date.

The move itself went pretty smoothly. I hired a typical local removal company to take care of my furniture, and was lucky enough to have some strong friends who were willing, in return for some beer, to help me pack and wrap up my furniture. I flew up to Scotland, and when I arrived at my new home, my stuff was already there, thanks to some handy coordination with the agents.

Relocating can be scary, and it can seem like there is a lot to do, but if you plan ahead and talk to the right people, it can actually be a remarkably easy experience. I have been really happy with my new flat, my new job, and my new life in Scotland, and I am really happy I took the plunge!
