Stephen Gately, born Stephen Patrick David Gately, was one of the five members of the British pop band, Boyzone. Gately, from Dublin, Ireland, is the second youngest of five children. Gately got his big break as a child actor in the movie The Commitments.

Later, Gately's stardom came from the unprecedented success of Boyzone, which formed in 1993 and later went to record six number one singles and four number one albums.

Boyzone's debut single, "Love Me For A Reason", peaked at number two on the pop charts in 1994.

Stephen Gately Comes Out
Gately came out to the public in June of 1999 at the age of 23. Gately later legally married his partner, Andy Cowles in a private London ceremony.

Untimely Death
Stephen Gately died on October 11, 2009 of acute pulmonary oedema, or an accumulation of fluid in the lungs, while on vacation on the Spanish island of Majorca. His body was found the morning after a night out with partner Andy Cowles.

Majorcan medical examiners have listed his death as from "natural causes," although the cause of his oedema is unknown. It is speculated that he may have choked on his own vomit.

Gately was writing a children's fantasy novel, The Tree of Seasons that he had hoped to release by Christmas. He was 33-years-old.
