How To Troubleshoot Outlook XP

    • 1). Check your network connection. If your wireless or ethernet adapter is not properly connected, Outlook will not be able to communicate with email servers. To check your network status, open the Start menu, click on "Control Panel" and double-click on the "Network Connections" icon.

    • 2). Make sure your network adapter is using the TCP/IP protocol. In the "Network Connections" window, right-click on your wireless or ethernet adapter icon and choose "Properties." Then go to the "General" tab and make sure the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" option is checked.

    • 3). Create a new mail profile. Sometimes Outlook will stop working because part of your mail profile has been corrupted. Go back to the "Control Panel" window and double-click on "Mail." Then click on "Show Profiles" and hit the "Add" button. Follow the on-screen instructions for configuring your email account and press "Finish" when you are done.

    • 4). Take Outlook online. If you are momentarily disconnected from the Internet, Outlook may fail to communicate with mail servers and will go offline. This will prevent you from sending or receiving new messages. To go back online, right-click on "Offline" in the lower-right corner of the main Outlook window and uncheck the option labeled "Work Offline."

    • 5). Run the AutoArchive tool. Outlook may slow down or stop responding if your mailbox size grows too large. To resolve the issue, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Mailbox Cleanup." Then click on the "AutoArchive" button. This will move old messages to an archive file and improve Outlook's performance.
