The Best Vitamins & Food for the Liver

    Vegetables

    • Dark green and leafy vegetables are essential to a healthy liver. Eating a diet rich in green leafy vegetables will also help lower your cholesterol. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption (no more than 1 to 2 alcoholic beverages or servings a week).

    Vitamin B

    • Vitamin B is also good for your liver. Make sure to take a good quality multivitamin each day. During the 1930s, researchers throughout the world began researching the human liver and vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 was discovered by two separate research teams at the same time. One research team was in the United States and the other was in England. The research was part of an extensive worldwide search for a compound that could effectively treat anemia.

      An American by the name of Karl Folkers led a research team in search of an anemia cure. Folkers was an American chemist at a pharmaceutical company. The solution was discovered by his research group in 1948. By measuring the growth rate of a certain type of bacteria, which was needed to successfully grow vitamin B12, the purification system was successfully sped up by researchers. The mapping of vitamin B12 was completed by Dorothy Hodgkin in 1956, who received a Nobel Prize in chemistry for her work. After a 10-year effort, vitamin B12 was finally synthesized by Robert Burns Woodward in 1971.

      Liver itself is the richest source of vitamin B12 and can be consumed for additional benefit to the liver. Vitamin B6 is also good for hormonal balance and for the elimination of toxic substances from the liver.

    Water

    • Drink plenty of water. This helps clear the toxins out of your body and is essential to a healthy liver. Drinking filtered water throughout the day will help the overall liver function. Additionally, pay attention to your body, only eating when you're hungry. Avoid eating when you're not hungry and avoid overeating. Whenever possible, drink "raw" juice and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. On that same note, don't walk around feeling hungry; eat when you're hungry. Even if you are used to eating at particular times throughout the day, eat if you are hungry "off schedule." Many people try to stick to the same eating schedule---and that doesn't always work for our bodies.

    Supplements

    Foods that are Liver Friendly

    • Junk food can overload the liver, so eat junk food as little as possible. Trans-fatty acids have a negative effect on the liver. Minerals, though, are good for the liver. Good minerals come from apples, celery, and carrots. You can also make your own juices out of these foods or buy the juice pre-made from the grocery store or specialty store.
