How to Build a Cat Shelter From Rigid Insulation

- 1). Cut a hole slightly larger than the size of your cat in one end of each plastic tote. Heat the plastic for a few minutes with a hair dryer to make it easier to cut. Cover the jagged plastic edges with pieces of duct tape.
- 2). Place the 18-gallon plastic tote inside the 28-gallon tote. Cut the rigid insulation with the box cutter to fit the gap between the two totes. Cut some scrap pieces of the rigid insulation and wedge them into corners to create a tight fit.
- 3). Cut a piece of an old blanket or carpet remnant to place on the bottom of the inside tote. Cover the totes with the lids. Locate an area to place the cat shelter outdoors away from direct rain, wind or snow. If possible, a garage is an ideal location.
