How to Replace the Capacitor in Cordless Phones

    • 1). Remove the battery from the cordless phone. Open the battery compartment at the back of the phone and remove the battery. This ensures a safe procedure.

    • 2). Open the phone. Most cordless phones are sealed along the sides. Locate that seal. They are sealed with a weak glue that can easily be cut through. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the crack between the two parts of the phone pry it open. Do this every inch until the phone is opened. Be careful not to fully crack the phone open.

Locate the capacitor. The capacitor looks like a little battery with two prongs sticking out of it.

    • 4). Remove the old capacitor. Use a wire stripper and cut the two prongs on the capacitor as close to the capacitor as possible. Leave as much of the prongs intact as you can.

    • 5). Purchase a replacement capacitor. Examine the old capacitor and see what model it is. Purchase a new one of the same model at an electronics store.

    • 6). Use a solder gun to solder the new capacitor in place. Solder the prongs on the new capacitor to the old prongs still sticking out of the phone.

    • 7). Put the phone back together. Many phones should snap into place. Replace the battery and test the phone. Once the phone has been tested successfully, it can be glued back together. Take the phone apart and apply a thin layer of super glue along the edges of the phone (where it comes apart). Put the phone back together, allowing the glue to dry and hold both sides together.
