How to Treat Bladder Infections

    • 1). See your doctor. Your doctor will examine you and take a urine specimen. He will also note if your urine contains blood or other sediments. Your doctor may recommend blood tests or imaging tests of your urinary tract. Give your doctor a complete medical history and description of your symptoms including fever and chills. Your treatment will be based on the results of his medical evaluation.

    • 2). Take the full course of antibiotics, if prescribed by your doctor, to resolve the infection. When your infection begins to resolve, your symptoms will subside.

    • 3). Drink plenty of water. Drinking water will cleanse your urinary tract and bladder of bacteria. Do not drink ice cold water because this may cause bladder spasms and upset your stomach.

    • 4). Drink cranberry juice. According to umm.edu, the University of Maryland Medical Center website, the vitamin C in cranberry juice acidifies the urine and might inhibit bacterial growth. Vitamin C supplements may have the same effect. Check with your doctor before taking vitamin C supplements.

    • 5). Ask about bladder numbing medications. Over-the-counter bladder numbing medications may be effective in treating your bladder infection symptoms. These medications will ease the pain and burning upon urination, but they also might turn your urine bright orange. Drink plenty of water when taking this medication.
