L'Alpe d'Huez

The mountain that shares its name with the resort is a well known destination for a number of outdoor sports, and, as well as the excellent skiing that makes it a great choice for a school ski trip, it is especially popular in the summer as a cycle racing destination, and is regularly included in the Tour de France route. In the winter, it becomes one of France's premier Alpine skiing resorts, with a variety of other winter sports available as well. Its sporting legacy extends to this area, with its proud history of having hosted a number of international championships, including the bobsleigh races at the 1968 Winter Olympics. Being known for excellence, it offers state of the art ski lifts and facilities, and extensive pistes suitable for all ability levels.

Activities

As well as its first-rate skiing, Alpe d'Huez has plenty for those spending time there on a school ski trip to fill up their itineraries in between their sessions on the slopes. The resort is full of lively Alpine atmosphere even in the heart of winter, with cosy caf©s to get out of the weather and a wealth of fun activities to keep students entertained. With swimming pools, ice-skating, discos and shopping there are plenty of opportunities. There are also some cultural sites that are well worth visiting, including the Church of Notre-Dame des Neiges (Our Lady of the Snow) and a museum documenting the history of the town of Huez.

Exploring Huez itself will provide a good mix of fun and culture, and for those who want to take their school ski trip groups further afield there are a number of fantastic options. These include the Pic Blanc site with its panoramic views of the French Alps, and the neighbouring region of Oisans with its stunning scenery and picturesque, historic towns - including the area's €capital', Bourg d'Oisans, which sits nestled between six beautiful valleys.
