Working together to fulfill the church's mission can bring church members together in a way that little else can. Through the process of ministering to others, those doing the ministering are brought closer together as they share experiences and act in purpose-driven ways. Some ministry activities can include establishing an alcohol and drug rehabilitation meeting group, offering financial management classes to low-income families, cleaning up blighted neighborhoods, establishing a prison visitation ministry, delivering food to shut-ins and helping the homeless find shelter and food. - Sharing food reinforces the familial bonds among church members.dinner image by cherie from Fotolia.com
Breaking bread together is more than symbolic. Sharing meals is a time-honored tradition to promote church family togetherness. Nearly every church has a kitchen for this reason. Fellowship activities involving food include weekly potluck dinners, progressive dinners, prayer breakfasts and picnics. Fasting is also a food-related togetherness activity. Church members can choose to fast from particular types of food or come together for very simple meals of bread and water or plain rice. - Choir members often form close friendships as they practice together.int??rieur de cath??drale image by Jean-Jacques Cordier from Fotolia.com
Music and song are also long-standing church traditions with everything from simple choruses to beautiful and complex liturgical sacred music. Music and song can be a tool to promote church family togetherness. Some music-related activities include choirs, instrumental ensembles, sing-alongs, musicals and concerts. Preparing for a concert or practicing music for a service can bring people together as they learn and worship with one another. - The church family that prays together, stays together.prayer image by Daria Miroshnikova from Fotolia.com
At the heart of any church is communion with God and through God, with other human beings. Coming together in prayer forms a special bond among church families. They submit individual egos to a higher power and seek wisdom to act according to divine guidance. Prayer activities that can bring people together include prayer vigils, prayer services, prayer groups and ritual prayers.
