Symptoms of Osteoporosis

    Fracture

    • It takes a bone fracture in many cases before a person becomes aware of her osteoporosis through her health care professional's diagnosis. These type of fractures often happen in the wrist or hip areas and many times after a fall.

    Compression

    • The spinal bones may be affected (vertebrae collapsing) through a simple act of twisting or bending, causing a compression fracture when you have osteoporosis.

    Loss of Height

    • A hump (kyphosis) may form in the back because of crushed vertebrae that fall into each other when the spine is no longer strong enough to hold up the body properly.

    Back Pain

    • An earlier symptom of osteoporosis may be simple back or bone pain. However, in many cases there are no early signs.

    Tooth Loss

    • As the bones shrink from osteoporosis, teeth may begin to loosen and fall out. Many times it is the dentist who sees the problem and urges a patient to seek medical attention.
