Homeland Security Jobs
The Department of Homeland Security is a part of the United States federal government. It was established on November 25th, 2002 in response to the September 11th attacks. It's primary responsibilities are to protect the U.S. from terrorist attacks and to respond to any natural disasters that may occur. It's the third largest Cabinet, right behind the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments. There are over two-hundred thousand employees, all who work to prepare, prevent, and respond to emergencies.
The department intended to consolidate the U.S. executive branch organizations, that were directly related to homeland security, into a single agency. The department actually has the most diverse federal functions then all other government agencies. This is because it incorporated twenty two different agencies into its one department. The most well-known of these include: Customs and Border Protection, FEMA, Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Coast Guard, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Secret Service and the Office of Inspector General.
Its creation had been the biggest government reorganization in all of Americas history. Then, on March 31st, 2003, it picked up and assumed the duties of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. This ended up dividing the enforcement services into two different agencies: the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Citizenship and Immigration Services. Not only that, but they also consolidated the INS, U.S. Customs Service, and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. They are now known as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Now, the Departments main focus is to protect the United States within, outside and at its borders. They coordinate their policies with the White House and the Homeland Security Council. Also, there are some other agencies that have big roles within homeland security. These are the Departments of Health and Human services, Energy, and Justice. Homeland Security has worked to connect all levels of government, but without duplication. They worked to put all of the resources from federal, state, and local levels of government together. Then, they worked endlessly to coordinate the transition of the multiple different agencies into a single one. This was all done with a single purpose in mind, which is to protect Americans and their homeland. Since its creation, the department has pulled their resources and worked towards their common goal. They have prevented crimes, punished those who have committed them, and worked nonstop to help Americans who have been affected by natural disasters.
