How to Make a Knife From a Knife Kit
- 1). Wrap the blade from the kit in three complete layers of masking tape to avoid cutting yourself. Be very careful not to wrap the tang or you will get the tape stuck inside the handle when you build it.
- 2). Mix the epoxy resin in the kit and apply over the entire tang of the blade and along the tang channels on the inside of both handle halves.
- 3). Set the tang of the blade into one of the handle halves, lining up the holes and the pins. Put the other handle half on top and press them firmly together.
- 4). Wait for the epoxy to harden and cure completely before moving on with the construction of the knife. The length of time will vary with the weather so allow plenty of extra time for curing.
- 5). Use an electric disk grinder to carve out the shape you want your handle to be. You can either follow the pattern provided with your kit or use one of your own designs.
- 6). Sand down the handle thoroughly using a sanding block until the wood is smooth. Apply varnishing oil in a thick, even coat to achieve a natural finish and protection on the wood.
