About the Stages of Home Building

    Design

    • A family, couple or person decides they want to build a home and visits with an architect to discuss the plans and layout; or, alternatively, they choose a pre-built layout (see Resources).

    Plans

    • The plans are finalized, and additional interior or exterior additions are made.

    Building Permits

    • The plans are presented to the city where the home is to be built. The plane must meet all of the city's zoning requirements to be approved.

    Contractor

    • The home builders contact a contractor to help them build the home. They will hire someone to excavate the land, if necessary; someone to build the foundation; and a group of workers to frame and finish the house.

    Wiring and Interior

    • After the home is built, an electrician is hired to wire it, a plumber is hired to install the pipes, and more contractors are hired to install drywall, siding and paint, and finish the interior with appliances, carpet and flooring.
