FURminator deShedding Tool for Large Cats over 10 lbs

About.com Rating

The Bottom Line

This tool really delivers. My cat has very long, silky hair that is difficult to manage when brushing. The previous version of this tool did not "eject" it from the brush, but this one does. It is a very ergonomic tool and just the right size for my cat. And dogs, too.

Pros
  • Excellent grooming tool, removing shed hair easily.
  • Well-built, quality construction.
  • Ergonomic and comfortable hand tool.

  • The eject button really works.
  • I used this on all of my pets: short-haired cat, long-haired cat and large dogs.

Cons
  • The cost of this tool is considerably highter than other grooming tools.

Description
  • I have lived with long-haired dogs all of my life and have used many tools. This one pulls out the most hair the quickest.
  • This tool is lightweight and easy to handle.
  • Removing shed hair prevents mats and skin problems related to matting.

Guide Review - FURminator deShedding Tool for Large Cats over 10 lbs

I have reviewed many FURminator tools over the years, and they have come a long way from one of the first tools I reviewed, the FURminator deShedding Brush Tool. I still have that tool, and I still use it, but I am always impressed by the FURminator company for continued enhancements to their tools.

In my last review of a cat-specific FURminator, the Cat FURminator Tool, I noticed that the ejector button didn't work for my long-haired cat, Barnie. The tool still worked fine for removing hair though, and I actually didn't mind that too much, since I automatically pull hair from the brush by hand after years of doing it that way.

(See additional photos here.)

When selecting a tool for this review, I had many options. This tool is officially the "long hair, large cat" tool. It is for cats over 10 pounds.

My cat Barnie was a stray that I found in my barn, thin and completely matted. I had to shave off nearly all of his hair. He is now an indoor cat, and the most meticulous of all of my cats. (Amazingly, and thankfully, not a hairball cat.) He keeps his coat in fine shape and doesn't love being brushed, but did sit for a FURminator session.

The first thing I tried was the "eject" button, since it didn't workfor his hair on the last model. It worked for my short-haired cats, just not this silky flyaway Barnie hair.

If you are familiar with the FURminator tools, you know that it only took a couple of strokes to get a full brush. And... it worked! The eject tool is now longer, and fully and easily ejected the hair.

This tool is also lightweight, ergonomically shaped, and with a grippy black handle. This is a big improvement over the FURminator Double Edge Tool which I found to be very "top heavy" and a little clunky to use. Still a great tool for grooming, but not as light and ergonomic as this tool.

Even though this tool is marketed for "long-hair, large cats" it worked great on all of my pets - Quincy a short-haired small Bengal, Sophie a Golden Retriever mix, and my two Greyhounds, Argos and Purl. They all loved the grooming sessions and lots of hair was collected as a result.
