How to Exterminate Chipmunks
- 1). Use live traps to catch the chipmunks. You can buy chipmunk live traps at most hardware or home and garden stores. Place the live trap in a place where you commonly see the chipmunks, such as at the base of tree trunks or underneath a bird feeder where they collect seeds to eat. Place a dish of sunflower seeds inside the trap to lure the chipmunk in. When the chipmunk enters the trap, the trap will close. You can then drive the chipmunk across town or to a local park and set it free.
- 2). Set up a rat trap to kill the chipmunks. Rat traps can be found at almost any hardware store. To catch a chipmunk, place the trap in areas where you commonly see them and set a small dish of sunflower seeds on or next to the rat trap. When the chipmunk comes to eat the seeds, the rat trap will snap, killing the chipmunk.
- 3). Have a cat roam your yard. Cats are one of the most common predators of chipmunks. While a cat can catch and kill chipmunks for you, the mere presence and scent of a cat in your yard will most likely be enough to scare off your existing chipmunks.
- 4). Create your own chipmunk trap using a 10-gallon pail. Fill the pail half full of water and put a handful of sunflower seeds in the bucket so that they float on top of the water. Use a small plank or wooden beam to create a ramp leading up to the bucket by placing one end on the top edge of the bucket and the other end of the plank on the ground. Place some more seeds around the bucket and on the plank leading up to the bucket. The chipmunks will see the seeds and thus run up the ramp into the bucket. Once inside the bucket, the chipmunk will be unable to climb out and some may even drown.
