Is herniorrhaphy recommended for pregnant women with an inguinal hernia?

During pregnancy, inguinal hernias should be repaired only on an emergency basis. At the 2000 joint scientific meeting of the American Hernia Society and the European Hernia Society in Toronto, Canada, Dr. Bocchi, stated:

1. The uterus protects against herniation of the bowel.

2. There is no indication for elective surgery before delivery.

My clinical experience supports the above policy.
