How to Make Dial Up Faster With Tweaks

    • 1). Click the "Start" icon at the bottom left corner of the desktop. Select "Control Panel" and click "Phone and Modem." Click the "Modems" tab and highlight the modem that is currently installed on your computer. Right-click and select "Properties."

    • 2). Locate "Maximum port speed" in the "General" tab and set it to "115,200." Click on the "Advanced" tab and check "use FIFO buffers" in "Advanced port settings." Slide both bars to the far right.

    • 3). Use your web browser to download the dial-up connection tweaking software of your choice. Follow the instructions provided by the program to further tweak your dial-up connection.

    • 4). Use a dial-up connection accelerator. These programs are often included in the premium packages of some Internet Service Providers (ISP). Accelerators rely on a combination of "compression" technology that squeezes web content and other media into smaller file sizes for easier downloading and proxy servers that learn your web browsing habits to store that information for future use.
