Ways to Stay Cool When Tent Camping

    Fan

If your campsite has electricity, you can use a fan to help keep cool. Make sure you have an extension cord that is approved for outdoor use to plug into the outlet. Keep the fan away from sources of water. Keep the cord out of the way so that family members do not trip over it and fall. Place the fan just outside the entrance to your tent and allow the air to blow inside. You may also move the fan closer to a picnic table to help cool you off while you are eating or grilling outside.

    Equipment

    • Using the proper tent will help you stay cool. If possible, use a tent that has a screen on the roof. Leave this screen open as much as possible to allow air to circulate. Keep the front and back flaps of the tent open as well. Place the tent in a shaded area if possible. In the event your campsite is not shaded, you may want to put up a canopy first. This will provide at least partial shade for your tent and keep all guests somewhat cooler.

    Ice

    • Keep plenty of ice on hand to keep all campers cool. Chill drinks in ice. Having a cold drink will lower body temperature more than a drink that is hot. It will also make you want to drink more, thus keeping you hydrated. Ice can be placed in a small zippered storage bag and placed on the back of the neck for some relief from the heat. Have three or four large zippered storage bags full of ice readily accessible to use in the event someone in your party shows signs of heat injury.

    Water

    • Having a lake or river near your campsite will go a long way toward helping you keep cool. If possible, pitch your tent near the water as the breeze coming off of it will provide some cooling relief. If swimming is allowed, you can take a dip during the afternoon to help cool off. Spraying yourself with water is also a good way to keep cool. Campers should always drink plenty of water as well. If shower facilities are available at the campground, take a cool shower rather than a hot or warm one.

    Dress

    • Dress in appropriate clothing to stay cool while camping. Wear light-colored clothing so as not to attract the sun. Clothing should be of lightweight material such as cotton. Campers may also elect to wear shirts made of moisture-wicking fabric. This material will keep sweat away from your body, exposing it to air so it can evaporate. A wide-brimmed hat can be worn to shade your face and shoulders from the sun. Wearing sun screen will also help keep you cool as it will repel the sun's rays and prevent sunburn.
