What Is the Software Publishers Association?

    History

    • The Software Publishers Association (SPA) was founded in 1984 by Ken Wasch. In 1999, SPA merged with the Information Industry Association (IIA), forming the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA).

    Responsibilities

    • The SIIA works with policymakers in the United States to protect the rights of software developers and ensure fair trade and distribution over the Internet.

    Divisions

    • The SIIA consist of five divisions. The anti-privacy division is where campaigns are made to fight against copyright infringement. The content division is a special-interest forum for businesses. The financial information division provides a forum for management of commercial data. The education division is devoted to educating businesses and the general public about piracy. The public policy division protects the interests of software companies in legal and public policy matters by contributing in legal decisions.

    Authority

    • The SIIA campaigns aggressively against piracy. If someone passes on pirated software over the Internet, the SIIA reports this to law enforcement.
