How to Troubleshoot a Nikon D300
- 1). Adjust the viewfinder if it is out of focus, but the final images are in-focus. Remove the lens cap and turn the Nikon D300 on with the power switch. Rotate the diopter control until the viewfinder display, focal points and auto focus areas are sharp. The diopter control is the small wheel on the right of the viewfinder. Insert a fully charged battery if the viewfinder is completely dark. Dim readouts in the viewfinder can be related to high temperatures. Keep the camera out of the sun until displays return to normal.
- 2). Rotate the focus mode selector to "S" (single-servo) or "C" (continuous-servo) if final images are out of focus. The selector is located on the lens. Both modes are auto-focus modes, but the "S" mode focuses once when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. If the subject moves between setting the focus and taking the shot, the subject may be out of focus. "C" mode continuously focuses and predicts movement. Use "C" in rapid movement-type shots, like in sporting events. Test the two modes.
- 3). Try the "M" (manual) focus mode if the camera won't focus at all in the previous step.
- 4). Adjust the settings for information displayed if shooting data appears, or a graph shows during playback. Press the up and down arrows to toggle through the different information displays.
