How to Choose a Pickup Truck for Plowing Snow

    • 1). Determine how much plowing you will need to do each winter. The truck required for commercial or heavy duty plowing will need to be much larger and more powerful than the truck needed for personal or light duty plowing.

    • 2). Select a truck with four-wheel drive. It is possible to plow with only front-wheel drive, but it is also much more difficult. Four-wheel drive prevents your truck from fishtailing on snow and ice and increase the amount of power you have to plow with.

    • 3). Select a truck with a stiffer suspension. This will ensure that the truck can take the weight of the plow blade on its front end.

    • 4). Determine what you want in a truck. Most trucks can be equipped for light plowing, so the majority of what goes into choosing a truck is determined by what else you want to do with it. If you plan to do a lot of hauling with your truck, select a larger model than if you were only planning to use it for casual driving.

    • 5). Discuss your choice with the dealer and ask for suggestions on plowing equipment specific to the vehicle you choose.
