    Commissioned Ranks

    • 1). Abbreviate the lowest commissioned rank for the Army and Marine Corps---Second Lieutenant---as 2LT and 2nd Lt., respectively. In the Navy, this position is called Ensign and is abbreviated ENS.

    • 2). Abbreviate the next commissioned rank for the Army and Marine Corps---First Lieutenant---as 1LT and 1st Lt., respectively. In the Navy, this position is called Lieutenant Junior Grade and is abbreviated LTJG.

    • 3). Abbreviate the next commissioned rank for the Army and Marine Corps---Captain---as CPT and Capt., respectively. In the Navy, this rank is the Lieutenant's rank and is abbreviated LT.

    • 4). Abbreviate the next commissioned rank for the Army and Marine Corps---Major---as MAJ and Maj., respectively. In the Navy, this rank is called Lieutenant Commander and is abbreviated LCDR.
