traditions wedding cake
Despite the rapid pace of change with which we all live with today, some traditions stay with us and one of those surrounding the use of the wedding cake. This is a tradition that's worldwide with many different reasons and roots going back many hundreds of years. The problem with many traditions is that over a period of time, and because they are usually remembered as a verbal custom, they change and the true meaning is often not known.
An example of this is the wedding cake which we believe was, at one time, made of many small wheat cakes; these were sprinkled over the head of the woman getting married. This was meant to bestow fertility and good luck to the new bride for her married life and is one wedding cake tradition which is not practiced any more. The bride and groom must choose the cake wisely as it will be the focus of attention for many photographs which will remember the occasion for many years.
Many types of wedding cakes exist today even sponge versions and the use of the traditional three tiers is not seen so often although there isn't any real limit to how many can be used. The bride and groom have a great deal of choice nowadays as to the type of wedding cake they can choose, even designing it themselves if they wish.
The purpose behind cutting the wedding cake was as a sign to everyone that the formalities associated with a wedding were over and that she would soon lose her virginity. Today however, this tradition includes the groom as well plus cutting the cake and sharing the first bite together, symbolizes that the wedded couple's promise to share a whole new life together.
According to another wedding cake tradition, if an unmarried person sleeps with a piece of cake under their pillow, they will dream of their future spouse that night. Even though this is an old tradition, it makes for a good story at the wedding reception. The top tier of the wedding cake was traditionally kept and used at the christening of the couple's first child but today this tradition has been modified slightly and the top tier is saved to be used at the couple's first anniversary.
At one time lucky charms attached to some colored ribbon were put into the cake and removed by the bridesmaids; each was different and had a separate meaning foretelling their fortune. Many of these charms are still in use today but it is more commonplace to attach them to bracelets as they can be purchased at any jewelers individually.
