National Fire Prevention Week Targets Kitchen Safety and Fire Systems

The use of modern, monitored igneous alarms in San Francisco is a crucial step toward optimal igneous prevention in the area, but it isn't the ONLY step. Awareness is just as important. If we're conscious of prevention techniques in the home and workplace and proactive about observing them, then we can substantially reduce the number of deadly igneous that occur each year.

Fire Prevention Week

The NFPA is a U.S. trade association that helps local government in San Francisco and throughout the country by developing and refining standards and codes for flame systems. Fire prevention is a point of emphasis for the organization, and the NFPA sets aside one week each year to generate acute awareness.

National Fire Prevention Week in 2013 runs until Saturday, October 12. The week is observed in both the United States and Canada, and local authorities across the nation participate by hosting demonstrations in schools as well as various programs and events throughout the community.

2013 Focus: Kitchen Fires

Each year, Flame Prevention Week highlights a unique message. For 2013, that spotlight shines on kitchen flames. This message is particularly appropriate in this area since kitchen burns are the most common reason that residential blazing alarms in San Francisco activate; in fact, fires that start in the kitchen account for nearly half of all home fires in San Francisco and its surrounding areas.

Preventing Kitchen Fires

Most fires that originate in the kitchen happen because of unattended cooking, and we could eliminate nearly all such fires simply by being present. Another issue is a lack of monitored fire systems in local residences. Kitchen fires can spiral out of control quickly, and every moment counts. A monitored security system assures that home security professionals on the other end of your system notify the local fire department so that they're en route as quickly as possible.

If you must leave the kitchen, even momentarily, turn off the stove and all other appliances.

Always use the back burners first and the front burners only when necessary.

When cooking, wear tight-fitting clothing and remove all dangling accessories.

Clean food and grease from the cooking area as you work.

Maintain a functioning, easily accessible fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

Keep all appliances clean, serviced and in good repair.

In Case of a Kitchen Fire

Even if you observe ideal kitchen protocol, a fire can still occur. In the event of a grease fire, never use water; instead, smother the fire, preferably with a properly fitted lid. If a fire occurs in an oven or microwave, turn the device off, close the appliance door and, if safe to do so, pull the plug. When an electrical fire occurs, put out the fire using a fire extinguisher.
