How To Start a Book and Magazine Share Program at Work

    • 1). Make an outline of your program. You will need to include in your plan where the shared books and magazines will be located and what items, if any, you will request management to supply, such as a small bookcase and a magazine rack. You will also want to state who will be in charge of the program and what their duties will be (keeping the bookcase in order and disposing of any outdated magazines).

    • 2). Present your program to management and be prepared to answer any questions that they might have. They may want to know what your cost estimate is as well as when you would be ready to put this program in place.

    • 3). Prepare an email regarding your program and send it to all employees. Explain that they can bring appropriate magazines and books to be shared, where the books and magazines will be located, and that anyone can take these to read, returning them when they are finished reading them.

    • 4). Generate some excitement about the program by making some simple bookmarks and placing them on the lunchroom tables. You can also send a broadcast email to all employees stating the date when the program will begin.

    • 5). Recruit volunteers to help take care of the bookcase and magazine rack on a rotating basis. Set a time and place to meet with them.

    • 6). Meet with your volunteers to discuss a rotating schedule as well as to set a date and time for your next meeting. Email the calendar to your volunteers.

    • 7). Set up your bookcase and magazine rack. Collect the donated books and magazines, checking that they are appropriate materials for the workplace.
