Self-catering Holidays In Aberdeenshire By The Forest

Situated just a little to the north of Huntly in Aberdeenshire, the Bin Forest essentially comprises a mixed conifer woodland which hosts a number of popular walks. Trees were initially planted by in the1840s by the Duke of Gordon.

One of the Bins most well-liked attractions is the serial award-winning Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch Centre, which is open during the summer months up until September.

Huntly itself has a population of around 4,500 and was previously known, for reasons best known only to the locals, as Milton of Strathbogie. In spite of its small size it has a castle and is also the home of the world famous Deans bakers, who bake the renowned shortbread biscuits. The historic home of the Gordon highlanders, Huntly also offers game fishing on the Bogie and Deveron rivers, as well as walking, mountain biking, rugby, golf and Nordic skiing.

A bit further north still is the civil parish of Turriff, which is known to many for having its own soccer team which was quite recently promoted to the Highland League, and Scotlands largest two-day agricultural show is also held in the town.

Turriff was the site of the first engagements of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms (163951). More recently, in 2010, a statue of the Turra Coo (Turriff Cow) was erected in the centre of the town in memory of a local farmer who refused to pay National Insurance when it was first introduced by David Lloyd George early in the last century and whose cow was then seized in part payment and sold on.

It is this profound history combined with the quaint allure of the surrounding towns that makes the Forest such an appealing place for tourists and holidaymakers in general. This part of the county in particular attracts so many who seek the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, together with the fresh air and healthy walks that the forest region provides.

A good way of spending some time in the Aberdeenshire countryside is by renting a self-catering country cottage. A quality holiday cottage affords the luxury and comfort that one should expect when living away on vacation with the peace and restfulness that comes with the knowledge that ones time is entirely ones own, and that one can eat and drink precisely what and when it suits at all times.

Scotland, and this part especially, is a must-visit place for those who love the outdoor life with a bit of culture to boot.
