How to Unlock a Three Phone in Australia

    • 1). Get the international mobile equipment identification, or IMEI, number by dialing *#06# into your phone's keypad. The IMEI will appear on the screen. This is a unique 15 to 17 digit code that cell phone companies use to identify a phone. You need this number in order to create your unlock code.

    • 2). Find a site that sells codes for the Three Network. A few that you can use are GSMLiberty, Unlocking, and UnlockToTalk. (See Resources.) As of 2010, a single use code will usually range in price from $12.99 to $35.99.

    • 3). Go to the website where you will purchase the unlock code and enter your IMEI number. Then select Three as your network and Australia as the country. Select the manufacturer of your phone as well as the model. Enter your email address and valid payment details and click "Submit."

    • 4). Open your email in a day or two. You will find the code. Be sure to write it down exactly as you see it.

    • 5). Turn your phone off and remove the battery. Pull the SIM card (memory chip) out. This is the white plastic rectangular card beneath the battery. Replace it with one from a different cell phone provider. This can be in Australia or from another country. You can purchase these from a mobile phone shop, and often from convenience stores, for about $20 as of 2010.

    • 6). Replace the battery and turn the phone back on. You will be asked to enter a special code. The exact wording will differ from phone to phone. Type in the unlock code and click "OK." Wait for your phone to restart. When it does, it will be unlocked. You can confirm this by looking to the top of the screen. You should see the name of the new mobile service provider.
