How to Fix a Hayward Northstar Pool Pump

    • 1). Clean out the debris from the Northstar pool pump basket. To do this, turn off the pool filter, open the lid to the pump basket and remove the pump basket. Dump out the excess leaves, hair and debris in the basket.

    • 2). Remove dirt from the impeller which is located right behind the pump basket assembly. While you have the pump basket lid open, remove the pump basket and reach into the tube leading from the pump basket assembly to the impeller. Remove any dirt that is clogging the impeller and check it to see if it wobbles.

    • 3). Replace or adjust the impeller if it is damaged or wobbling. The impeller is the heart of the Northstar pump. Its rotation creates the vacuum environment which suctions the water from the pool into the filtration system. It should rotate on a flat plane, similar to the blades of a fan. If the impeller wobbles to and fro, you must adjust or replace it.

    • 4). Listen to the Northstar pump motor. Over time, pump motors begin to wear out. If it makes a high-pitch whining noise or a grinding sound, it's time to replace the bearings which involves disassembling the motor. If you are not familiar with its inner workings take the motor to a qualified technician.

    • 5). Check the water level in the pump basket. Northstar pool pumps are self-priming and must have adequate water in the pump assembly. If the pump basket area is dry, open the pump basket lid which allows trapped air to escape and forces the water to flow into the pump. Tighten the lid before operating the pump.
