Army Rank Explanation
- The United States Army adheres to a strict rank for the enlisted solider. Movement up the chain of command is based on commitment, dedication, and success. Each level, or rank, comes with specific set of duties.
- A Private (PVT) is the starting rank for all men and women who are trainees and are beginning basic combat training. Privates are to follow orders given by superiors. Private First Class (PVC) are Privates who are moved up in rank after one year or less at the recommendation of a supervisor.
A Specialist (SPC) has been in service for at least two years and can manage soldiers of lower rank. They must attend a specific course to earn the rank of SPC. - A Corporal (CPL) acts as a leader to Army units and are responsible for training, appearance of their unit.
Sergeant (SRG) is in charge of a squad of about 9 to 10 soldiers and oversees their day to day tasks. They are considered to be the most influential and are role models for the Privates. - Much like the Sergeant, the Staff Sergeant (SSG) is in command of a squad of 9 to 10 soldiers, but also can have several sergeants under their command as well. They also oversee soldier development and growth.
A Sergent First Class (SFC) has roughly 15 or more years experience in the Army and is the adviser to the Platoon leader. - A Master Sergeant (MSG) is a Non-Commissioned Officer who operates at the battalion level and charged with dispatching and other duties.
A First Sergeant (1SG) assists approximately 62 to 190 soldiers, assists in training, discipline and other duties. The 1SG is often considered by soldiers to be the heart of the company. - The Sergeant Majors (SGM) are the head administrators at Army headquarters.
Command Sergeants (CSM) advise the commanding officer on duties, appearance of the unit, conduct and discipline recommendations, regulator of policies and other advisory roles. - The Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) oversees all Non-Commissioned Officers. There is only one SMA in the Army. This rank plays the chief advisory role to the Chief of Staff of the Army.
