Kansas state law requires that cars possess certain equipment in order to pass inspection and be legally fit for the road. The statutes include regulations for mirrors on all motor vehicles, including motorcycles. These include provisions for side mirrors, which must be present on the left side of all motor vehicles, but not necessarily on both sides. State law does not expressly restrict the size or tinting of mirrors. - Section 8-1740 of the Kansas Statutes Annotated, or KSA, requires that every motor vehicle be equipped with a side mirror on the left side of the vehicle. Additionally, all vehicles except motorcycles must possess a second mirror located either inside the vehicle near the center or on the right side of the vehicle. The second mirror must reflect the driver's view to the rear of the vehicle. These mirrors must be kept in good condition. Any damage that inhibits the driver's view reflected by the mirror must be repaired in a fashion that does not inhibit the driver's view.
- Section 8-1810 of the KSA requires that motorcycles comply with section 8-1740 regarding mirrors, which states that motorcycles must be equipped with a side mirror on the left side; however, motorcycles are not required to have a second mirror. The good condition requirement in section 8-1740 also applies to motorcycles.
- Section 8-1701 states it is illegal to knowingly drive any vehicle that is missing required equipment, including a side mirror on the left side of the vehicle and an additional mirror on vehicles other than motorcycles. Violating section 8-1701 is a traffic infraction. Sections 8-1759 and 8-1759A require drivers to undergo spot inspections when conducted by the Kansas Highway Patrol either at check points or when stopped by an officer. Failure to submit to inspection is a class A misdemeanor.
