How to Record with a Behringer PMP 2000

    • 1). Connect your microphone to your mixer. Though the PMP 2000 offers 14 channels, the best way to learn how to use a mixer is to start with one channel. Plug one end of your XLR cable into the "Channel 1" input and then plug the other end into your microphone.

    • 2). Connect your mixer to your monitor speakers. On the back of the PMP 2000, there are two 1/4-inch outputs that read "right mono" and "left mono." Plug a 1/4-inch audio cable into each of these inputs and then run the ends of the cables into the 1/4-inch inputs on your two monitor speakers.

    • 3). Test your mixer setup. Prior to turning your mixer on, set the master volume and Channel 1 volume at zero. Then turn your mixer on. Slowly turn the Channel 1 and master volume up until you can clearly hear your vocals in the monitor speakers.

    • 4). Equalize your vocals. Using the "high," "mid" and "low" equalizer knobs on the Channel 1 input, adjust the sound of your vocals to your liking. Manipulating these knobs will increase and reduce the high, mid and low frequencies of your voice.

    • 5). Connect your mixer to your computer. Using the 1/4-inch-to-1/8-inch audio cable, connect your mixer to your computer. Place the 1/4-inch side of the cable in the "left/mono preamp output" input on the front of the mixer. Then connect the 1/8-inch side of the cable to the audio input on your computer. When connecting your mixer to your computer, it is important to make sure that the volume of the mixer is at zero.

    • 6). Open a project with your recording software. To make a simple recording, you can use a variety of consumer recording programs, such as Garageband, Cubase or Logic. Open a recording program and then create a new project. In the "Preferences" section, be sure to set your input to "line-in." This will tell the computer to record from its audio input.

    • 7). Record your vocals. Turn the volume on the mixer back up and then press "Record" in your recording program. Sing into the microphone. You should see your vocals register in the recording program.

    • 8). Record multiple instruments simultaneously or separately. Because the PMP 2000 offers 14 channels, you can record several tracks at the same time. To do this, mic each instrument you wish to use and then use the mixer and the monitor speakers to achieve the sound balance that you desire. Record directly into your computer using the setup described in the above steps. You can also track your instruments separately by recording them one at a time into your computer.
