Top 1 802.11g Wireless Routers With 108 Mbps Extensions

Many wireless home network routers support the 802.11gWiFi standard. 802.11g offers a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 54 Mbps. However, some WiFi router manufacturers have added proprietary extensions to their 802.11g products, enabling them to support 108 Mbps (up to twice the standard bandwidth). Proprietary in this case means the router must be matched with compatible network adapters, often from the same manufacturer, to realize the higher bandwidth.

1. MIMO / Pre-N 802.11g-Compatible Wireless Routers

Some 108 Mbps wireless routers don't use the kind of proprietary extensions as those listed above do. Instead, they support an emerging WiFi standard called MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output). Using two or three built-in antennas instead of one, MIMO routers may offer superior range, compatibility, and real-world speed over other 108 Mbps wireless routers. MIMO technology is a key feature of the 802.11n WiFi standard being developed. Routers in this class are often called "pre-N" products.More »
