How to Polish Wood Wheels
- 1). Wear eye protection and rubber gloves while polishing the wood wheels. Work in a well-ventilated area for best results and to prevent inhaling the chemicals smells as much as possible.
- 2). Spread the shellac over the wheels with a paint brush. Apply a very thin coat. Allow the coat to dry for about 10 minutes. The shellac should be dry to the touch at this point. Apply a thin second and third coat in the same manner.
- 3). Allow the shellac to dry overnight. Sand the surface of the wheels lightly with 600 grit sandpaper. Wipe away the dust with a soft cloth.
- 4). Fold a soft, lint-free cloth into a ball. Apply enough shellac to the bottom of the cloth ball to create a moist surface. Do not wet the cloth enough to cause dripping. Make sure the shellac is spread evenly on the bottom of the cloth. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the shellac.
- 5). Touch the surface of the wheel gently with the shellac-covered cloth ball. Without stopping, gently push the cloth across the surface of the wheel. You are essentially "skating" across the surface of the wheel with the shellac cloth. Holding the cloth for too long in one area will create an uneven application.
- 6). Place the cloth ball in an airtight container for two hours. Wait for the shellac on the wheels to dry during this time. Take out the cloth ball and add a small amount of denatured alcohol to the bottom of the ball.
- 7). Dab the surface of the wheels with the shellac ball to even out the polish. This will create a shiny, even polish on the surface of the wheels.
