Infant Formula Alternatives
- Breast milk is the best alternative to commercial formulas. The American Academy of Pediatrics, or the AAP, says babies should be breastfed exclusively for the first six months of an infants life. Furthermore, if the mother is able to, the AAP encourages breastfeeding until the child is 12 months old. A mother's body provides the most efficient milk for an infant with the proper amount of proteins, fats, immunity boosters and nutrients an infant needs for proper development.
- This liver formula is considered to have similar nutrients as mother's milk. This formula recipe makes 36 oz. of formula. The ingredients can be found at alternative health food suppliers like Radiant Life or Natrem.
3 3/4 cups homemade chicken broth
2 ounces liver, use organic liver and chop into small pieces
5 tbsp. lactose
1/4 tsp. bifidobacterium infantis
1/4 cup homemade liquid whey
1 tbsp. coconut oil
1/2 tsp. of high-vitamin cod liver
1 tsp. unrefined sunflower oil
2 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp. acerola powder
Cook the liver in the broth until it is completely cooked through. This can take about five minutes. Pour the liver and broth into a food processor with the rest of the ingredients and cool this blended mixture in the fridge in a glass container. Make this formula daily to ensure the freshness of the nutrients in the formula. - Some mothers prefer to use raw goat milk for their infant formula. Goats milk is rich in fat but it is lacking in folic acid and is low in vitamin B12. If a mother insists in using goat milk, then supplementation of folic acid and B12 are key. Organic chicken liver can be added to increase the nutrients and at 4 months, you can start feeding your infant cooked egg yolks.
- Some mothers prefer to fortify their commercial formula with added nutrients like egg yolks. Egg yolks are believed to contain essential fats that help brain development in infants. Start with a cup of milk based formula and then add 29 oz. of distilled water, a cooked egg yolk and one tsp. of cod liver oil and blend in a processor until smooth.
