Bath Tile Options
- Ceramic tile is often used in bathroom projects because it wears extremely well and is relatively inexpensive. It can be used on both walls and floors, and comes in a variety of colors, patterns, sizes and shapes so you can customize the look of your bath area. Ceramic tile is also easy to clean and disinfect, which can be extremely helpful in a bathroom.
- Porcelain is a type of ceramic tile but is harder and stronger than traditional ceramic tile. However, its hardness can make it more difficult to install, so using it in your bathroom is usually more expensive. Like ceramic, porcelain tile is available in a wide range of colors, textures and sizes that allow for a highly decorative look. It should only be used on the walls, though, because it has a slippery surface that makes it dangerous for use on the floor.
- Granite tile is ideal for use in a bath area because it is highly durable and resistant to scratches. It also has a distinctive appearance that can give your bathroom an inviting, natural look. Because it is so strong, however, it is difficult to cut so installation can be difficult. Other stones may be used for bathroom tile as well, such as sandstone and limestone, because they have a highly decorative appearance. However, these types of stone have a porous surface so they stain easily. If you are not willing to put up with the maintenance requirement, they may not be a good fit for your bathroom.
- For a luxurious look in your bathroom, marble tile is an ideal option. It has a smooth, attractive appearance and instantly gives your bath area an upscale look. However, it is one of the most expensive types of tile for a bathroom so it may not fit all budgets. Marble is also soft so it can scratch, chip and crack easily. It is prone to stains as well and must be cleaned regularly to protect the surface. In addition, because it is an organic substance, the patterns and colors in marble are natural and random, making it difficult to match if a tile needs to be replaced.
- Glass tile is another elegant option for your bath area. It is ideal for use in a shower or on tub walls, and the variety of colors, textures and shapes can be used to create a mosaic design that makes a dramatic statement in a small space. Like marble, however, glass tile is costly. It is also difficult to install, so a professional is required to complete the project.
