Skype is an online phone service. Users can make video and audio calls to other Skype users, landlines or mobile phones. The first headsets compatible with Skype were reminiscent of older telephones--the headset cable required the user to stay close to the computer during the conversation. Now, many Skype headsets are wireless and give users more freedom of movement while talking. - This wireless Bluetooth headset from AmbiCom connects to the computer with a Bluetooth USB adapter. It fits conveniently over the ear and weighs only 0.3 ounces. It is Skype-compatible and has a range of 33 feet. It comes with a rechargeable battery and has a reported talk time of five hours and a standby time of 60 hours. Its CNET price was $48.99 and YourWirelessStore price was $44.13 as of September 2010.
- The Plantronics Audio 920 Bluetooth headset is compatible with most Bluetooth-enabled devices, which allows it to switch seamlessly between services such as Skype and a mobile phone. To use this headset with Skype, install the PerSonoCall software that comes with the device. The software also enables remote call control for the headset. Plantronics sold this headset for $109.95 and VOIPSupply sold this headset for $59.99 as of September 2010.
- The Freetalk Everyman Pro Pack can be bought directly from Skype. This pack features not only a wireless headset but also a camera for video calls. Skype claims this camera is the "sharpest, clearest and best-defined video engineered" to work with their service. Unlike some other wireless microphones, this headset features two speakers that fit snugly over each ear and an omnidirectional, extended microphone that gets closer to the mouth. The headset has a usage time of six hours. Skype charged $139.99 for this set and DealNay charged $72.99 as of September 2010.
