Make Denim Rose Decorations
Denim roses make fun decorations that can be pinned onto tee-shirts, purses and more for a cute effect. They look especially sweet when added to children's clothing, as you'll see in this tutorial. They're a snap to make, too.
Cut a Strip of Denim
First, use a strong pair of scissors to cut a one- to two-inch strip from the bottom (hem area) of an old pair of jeans. Lay the strip horizontally and fold it in half long-ways a couple of times, to make a thicker strip to work with.
You can lay your scissors on the end of the denim strip to keep it folded as you work. Or, use your sewing needle or a straight pin to hold it together for the next step.
Roll Up the Denim Strip
Now, holding the end of the folded denim strip, begin to roll the strip loosely around this starting point, so the hem starts to form a coil.
You can experiment with twisting the strip as you roll it, to create interesting folds in the “petals”.
When you've finished rolling up the strip, pinch it at the bottom with one hand, and use the fingers of your other hand to poke, pull and arrange the "petals" until they look just so. Then sew a few strategic hand-stitches with a needle and thread, to hold the petals in place.
Add your denim roses to clothing items and accessories for a cute effect. They look sweet when placed along the neckline of a kid's tee-shirt, as pictured here -- just do a few hand-stitches from underneath, to secure them to the top.
You can also add denim roses to the back pockets of children's jeans for an adorable upgrade. Other uses for denim roses include sewing them onto purses. As an alternative to sewing, you could also attach a pin backing -- available at craft stores -- onto your denim roses with craft glue, so they can be pinned anywhere, anytime you feel like it.
