How to Choose a New Convertible

  • 1). Consider the interior. If it gets wet, leather or vinyl will be easier to clean or dry off than cloth.

  • 2). Think about safety. Some convertibles now have roll bars that will pop up automatically in the event of an accident. Others have reinforced windshields.

  • 3). Examine the top's folding mechanism. Is it easy to operate? How fast is it?

  • 4). Look for a glass rear window. Plastic rear windows don't last very long and are hard to see through.

  • 5). Consider the body structure. Convertibles have added reinforcements to make up for the absence of a roof. However, some are better than others. Listen for uncharacteristic rattles, creaks and shakes when you drive over rough pavement.

  • 6). Look at the cargo space. When down, many convertible tops take up quite a bit of trunk space.
