Shelter Vehicles in Winter with Carports

The large storms of winter may have already passed, but until the weather warms up, your vehicle still needs protection. No matter if you own a car, motorcycle, boat, or RV, keeping any of these outdoors shortens the lifespan, reducing the amount of use you could get out of it. Instead of taking a risk, add a carport to your property to cover your vehicle.

Carports are not only designed for long-term storage. If you want to protect your car and keep it from getting we, coated with ice, or covered in snow, sheltering it under a carport keeps your vehicle clean. On the mornings you wake up and notice a foot of snow on the ground, your vehicle remains relatively dry – no shoveling off snow or chipping away ice that formed around the wheels. To get your car out of the driveway and to get on your way, all you need to do is shovel a path from the carport to the street.

Carports are sturdy structures consisting of a steel frame and a polyethylene or metal top. The powder-coated or galvanized steel frame holds up to large amounts of snow and high winds, once anchored into the ground. The top portion is waterproof and UV resistant. Although steel naturally has these properties, a polyethylene tarp is treated to be UV resistant, waterproof, rot proof, and mildew resistant. This combination prevents UV and water damage and, by allowing air to circulate inside, also prevents mildew, mold, and dry rot from forming on your vehicle.

Carports are designed with a valance or enclosed style. The former is ideal for protecting your everyday vehicle from UV and water damage and shelters it from the element. Valance-style carports are open, with the exception of the top, and have overhangs on both sides. Fully metal carports, as well, are designed with a valance style.

Enclosed carports, however, provide full coverage on all sides through tarps. RVs and boats, in winter, need to be protected from the elements to prevent physical damage, such as a cracked or worn surface and mildew, mold, or dry rot accumulation. Tarps are draped over all sides, and the structure has a rollup or zipper door. Once the investment is inside, it is fully protected from elements outside and can stay inside for several months.

Before purchasing and installing a carport, however, check any local ordinances regarding portable shelters. Towns or neighborhoods regulate portable shelters in regards to location and size.
