OSHA Hazard Identification

    Function

    • Companies need to document all hazardous materials that they receive or use in a master list. Manufacturers have the responsibility of generating Material Safety Data Sheets, and employers have the responsibility to educate employees about the materials, the potential hazards and risks, how to take precautionary measures, what to do in an emergency and recommendations for First Aid.

    Types

    • Hazardous containers should be labeled with consistent colors and symbols to indicate different types of hazards such as respiratory, heat, electrical or chemical dangers. Employees should be trained on the types of hazards, handling requirements and what to do in an emergency to contain the problem and apply First Aid.

    Prevention/Solution

    • OSHA offers free consultations to companies and will provide various methods to support educational services such as videos, pamphlets and public speakers. Employers can get help if they are not sure what documentation, labeling or training needs they have to address, according to OSHA.gov.
