How to Troubleshoot Residential Safety Lights With Motion Detectors
- 1). Aim the motion detector element. It should point at the area where you want to detect motion. There may be a thumbwheel which will allow you to loosen the element and point it. Some elements may need to be unscrewed to loosen them. Point the detector horizontally and away from the street where it could pick up excessive motion.
- 2). Replace the floodlight bulb if one of the two bulbs does not work. If both are out, make sure that there isn't a master switch on the wall nearby that has been turned off inadvertently.
- 3). Test the system. Press the "Test" button. The test button allows you to test the sensor in daylight. Move within the detection range and verify that the lights come on. Make any adjustments if necessary.
- 4). Set the "On Time" switch which regulates the duration the light stays on after detecting motion. Change the time if the delay is too long or too short. Set it to a suitable delay for your application, such as a minute, five minutes or 10 minutes, depending on how long it takes you to walk from the street to your front door--if that's your application.
