Organizing Food Storage Containers in Your Refrigerator

Whenever you have leftovers, it is important that to store them properly.
Leaving them in the pot it was cooked in or dish it was served in can lead to it turning bad, and becoming potentially harmful to your body.
Food storage containers easily solve this problem.
They keep leftovers as well as uncooked foods fresh.
What often happens, though, is people go container crazy, and before they know it, they have a fridge full of disorganized containers! Before discussing how to organize containers, it should be noted that glass containers are always better to use when it comes to food storage.
Some plastic containers can be stained by food.
If food goes bad in a plastic container, it has the potential to affect any future food stored in it.
There are also theories that the chemicals in plastic can leech onto the food and become digested by the person eating it.
So as much as possible, try to use glass! Now, when it comes to organizing your food containers, there are a few things you need to think about:
  1. Weight
  2. Generally, heavier containers should go on bottom shelves.
Though it is a rare occurrence, should your fridge shelves give way, you want the bottom shelves to contain heavier and sturdier containers.
This will help keep things from breaking.
  3. Type of Food
  4. The type of food you will be storing will also factor into your organizing scheme.
For example, sauces should be stored on lower shelves and further back in the fridge.
You store them lower because if they spill, it's easier to clean, and in the back because it's less likely that accidents will occur back there.
  5. Position in the Refrigerator
  6. The area in which you put food in a refrigerator affects how well it keeps.
The shelves on the inside of the fridge door, as well as the area closer to the fridge door are not as cold as the back of the fridge.
These areas are also more prone to moisture.
The reason behind both of these problems is because whenever the door is opened, these are the areas that are most affected by warm air from the outside.
So, if you have a food item that you need to keep cold and dry, try to situate it at the back of the fridge.
The best way to keep your food containers organized is to keep them moving.
Remember, just because food is in a container, doesn't mean it will stay fresh forever.
Try to eat your leftovers before cooking anything new.
You should also try to eat other perishables, like fresh vegetables and fruit, before anything else.
When you consume these things first, you will find that there will be less you need to keep in containers and in the fridge, making everything easier to organize.
When you need to freeze food, it is important that you continue and try to use glass food storage containers.
If this isn't possible, make sure the plastic containers you choose are the kind that can be frozen.
One neat trick you can do is to freeze your food in resealable plastic bags or Ziplock bags.
These can be frozen, and they keep food well.
Plus, laying the bags flat makes the food is easier to store in the freezer, and it gives you more freezer space as well!
