How to Get Copies of Your Past W-2S
- 1). Contact your employer and ask them to provide you a copy.
- 2). Contact the Internal Revenue Service. You will need to complete Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return. This form is available on the IRS website (see Reference).
- 3). Fill out all the required identifying information on the form: name, Social Security number and address. Identify the type of return that was filed and the year you are requesting. Your W-2 is considered an attachment and will be sent along with the copy of the tax return.
- 4). Pay the fee. The current fee is listed on the 4506 form. This fee must be submitted before the request will be processed.
- 5). Mail or fax the form to the location listed on the second page of Form 4506. The mailing address will vary, depending on your geographic location. Alternatively, you can call the IRS and request a copy via their automated self-help system.
- 6). Wait 60 calendar days for your request to be processed. Contact the IRS after 60 days if you have not received your W-2.
