Event Photography the English Way

Event Photography is all about workflow and at the heart of this is the dye-sublimation printer. A good event photographer's workflow will mean that the clients can view the images, purchase them and have them in their hands almost instantaneously, as it typically takes less than 20 seconds to print a 9"x6" print. Manufacturers now also provide dye sublimation printers that print up 12"x8" allowing a larger range of products to produced on-site.

This is a radical change from 30 years where it would have meant a quick trip back to the lab to develop and print the images and then a return to the venue and hope to sell them. Now the customer has a greater choice because the photographer can take as many photographs as they want and then the customer can be shown large previews so they know exactly what they will be getting in advance.

Speed and flexibility are the event photographer's toolkit. Using wireless transmitters the images are sent directly to the sales point where the customer can select the images and have them produced in many formats and products such as key-rings or fridge magnets along with customised prints such as Magazine Covers. Photographs can quickly have corporate branding added to be used as a marketing tool.

Event photography is suitable for all sorts of events, in recent weeks we have covered school proms to Moto-X, Equestrian to Black Tie Social with some Dog Agility and wedding receptions thrown in. Some photographers specialise in one area but it is the variety of events that make many photographers attracted to this type of work. Some events are pre-paid, some will be on an attend and sell basis - there is no such thing as a typical event.

An event photographer has to be an expert at whatever types of events that they choose to cover as well as having the equipment and the props to cover all eventualities therefore we carry everything from a posing stool to a baby poser, backgrounds in all shapes, sizes and designs and many studios would be envious of the range of lighting gear and modifiers as you never know where you will be expected to work, where you will get your power from or how the customers are going to be dressed.

There are of course some tools that hopefully the customer will never see such as the Liability insurance and public indemnity insurance certificates along with all the paperwork supporting the electrical safety checks. We need to work fast and safe making sure that loose cables are taped down and equipment is erected where it will not cause issue.

The life of an event photographer is varied and interesting.
