- 1). Put on safety gear, including goggles, a mask and gloves. The solvents you will need to use are very caustic. Open all available windows, and turn on fans to provide ventilation while you work.
- 2). Pour a small amount of mineral spirits underneath the tar paper. Allow it to work for a few seconds, then use a putty knife to scrape up the tar paper.
- 3). Use paint stripper if the mineral spirits do not produce results. Apply the paint stripper according to the package directions and allow it to sit on the tar paper at least overnight.
- 4). Scrape the tar paper away with the putty knife until it is completely removed.
