Tourism At Pench National Park
Pench in Seoni Hills is one of the wildlife preserve in India which was not the hunting grounds of the Maharajas. Most of the tiger reserves in India were hunting grounds of the erstwhile Maharajas. The Royals hunted extensively but in turn protected the forests from the plunderers. Though well known since the British Raj, Pench developed as a tourist destination in recent times.
In Kipling"s "Jungle Book" the forests have been described as dense and full of life. The Pench forests of Seoni Hills are vividly described in the work along with its wild denizens. Mowgli and the wolf pack made the forest popular. The characters of Jungle book and exotic forests of Central India lived on in the dreams of many.
In earlier times Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench were a contiguous patch of forest teeming with Central Indian wildlife and birds. With growth in population, the advancing villages and agriculture decimated most of the jungles. These three major reserves are but small pockets that require committed conservation measures.
Kanha was world famous but Bandhavgarh and Pench became popular for tourism in post seventy eras. Tourism at the tiger reserves brought these forests under the eyes of the concerned citizens of India which meant greater pressure to conserve the parks. It was due to foresight of late Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi that brought many such bio diverse zones under the umbrella of conservation.
With conservation measures the wildlife especially the tiger received protec
tion and increased in numbers. This made the park viable for tourism and the infrastructure began to develop. Like the hotels in Kanha which were established keeping Indian visitors in the mind. The hotels in Pench too targeted locals. But the film on tigers and Indian wildlife brought the parks fame in the whole World. Thus the number of foreign visitors began to increase.
The plight of the tiger also made it an object of desire to be seen in the wild. Hence tourists from many countries began to visit tiger reserves like Pench in large numbers. This created a huge demand for accommodation and a large number of rooms are required in Pench during the holiday rush. Consequently many hotels, luxury jungle lodges and wildlife camps were set up.
