The Worst Call For A Parent

Yesterday morning, around 9:30 a.
m.
as I was writing my weekly blog, I received the worst call for a parent - a call from the emergency room.
My son and his two friends had been in a car accident.
I immediately called my wife, drove to pick her up from work, and proceeded to the hospital.
My wife was frantic and I was feeling frantic as well.
However, as the leader of my family, I knew I had to hold it together, because if she sees me fall apart she will surely lose hope.
As a parent, failing to lead is not an option - in fact, your family is depending on it.
You have to hold it together even when you don't know what the outcome will be.
Part of leadership is the way you handle family situations and providing proper leadership at the right time.
When we entered the hospital, we immediately went to the nurse's station to find out my son's condition.
They didn't know! We were soon called to where the other two boy's parents were waiting.
You could see they were panicking.
I immediately said, "Let's wait until the doctor comes in and gives us the prognosis so we know how to proceed because, at this point, we don't know anything.
" Ten minutes later the doctor arrived and everyone in the room became silent.
He introduced himself and said our kids had a few broken bones and were cut up badly.
As you can image, we all breathed a sigh of relief.
The doctor continued to say we should all be very thankful because this is rare.
The reason he made this statement is because my son (who was sitting in the back seat) and the driver, were thrown from the truck.
The young man in the passenger seat remained in the truck as it flipped three times.
All of the young men walked away from the accident with minor injuries.
My son has a broken nose and the other young man has a broken rib.
The young man who remained in the truck arm has a cut up arm.
They all are cut up and banged up - but praise God for His protection! As a leader there are so many times that situations call for you to remain calm.
If you lose it - everybody around you loses it, too.
In the mist of the storm, if you remain centered, everyone else will feed off your energy.
The next time you are in a heated situation, remain calm and watch the effect it has on everyone involved.
Once I got home to my quiet place, I was able to cry and say thanks to God for His protection.
My ability to lead and stand strong as a parent in the midst of this situation gave everyone comfort when we all felt discomfort.
Martin Luther King Jr.
said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
