Generators for Electric Cars

    Diesel Generator

    • Though it sort of cuts into the environmentally friendly nature of an electric car, some models have an on-board diesel generator. Many of these models are homemade, but the diesel generator is used to create power that goes directly to the electric car's batteries, extending their life and the range of the vehicle.

    Hydrogen Fuel Cells

    • Another form of electrical generation for cars is hydrogen fuel cells. These fuel cells take hydrogen and separate it into electricity and water. This helps eliminate the problem of fuel emissions, and it helps to create an environmentally safe form of electricity generation. However, these vehicles still have a fairly short range, which makes them impractical and rather expensive.

    Portable Generator

    • If you have a plug-in electric vehicle, then you can use a portable generator to charge it. Whether the generator runs off kerosene, diesel fuel or propane, as long as the portable generator produces electricity, you can plug your car right in and use it to juice up your batteries again.

    Hybrid Engine

    • Though a hybrid is not a true electric car, its engine uses both gasoline and electricity from batteries for power. The batteries are constantly recharged from the braking of the vehicle, so that when the batteries are called on to provide power, they can. The engine has a symbiotic relationship with the electricity, stretching out the miles per gallon, and the internal combustion, working to recharge the batteries when they're not being used.
